Tech and culture this week

30 August 2026

You probably saw the Apple event. The iPhone 17 is thinner, faster, and costs more. It will sell tens of millions. The real shift is not in the hardware but in the default app behaviour. Apple is pushing on-device AI harder than ever. That means your photos, messages and calendar will stay on your phone instead of being processed in a cloud. Privacy becomes a feature you pay for, not a promise you trust.

ByteDance launched a social reading app called ReadIn in the UK. It lets you highlight passages and see what your friends highlighted in the same book. It is a direct attempt to fix the loneliness of digital reading. The early data shows people spend more time on the app than on Instagram. Culture consumption is becoming more communal again, but through screens.

The Spotify podcast deal with the Obamas ended. The exclusive era is over. Podcasts are going back to being distributed everywhere. That is good for listeners and bad for platform lock-in. The content bubble in audio is deflating quietly.

On the culture side, the UK box office had its worst August in a decade. No blockbuster carried the month. People are staying home and watching long-form documentaries instead. The top two streaming titles this week are both over three hours long. Attention spans are not shrinking. They are choosing depth over novelty.

Tech is not changing what we do. It is changing how we want to do it.
