The thrill is gone

04 September 2026

Deal hunting is a trap. You think you are outsmarting the system, but you are just training yourself to buy things you do not need. The real win is not spending at all.

I watch people chase discounts. They subscribe to ten newsletters. They compare prices across six tabs. They wait for Black Friday. And then they buy something they would not have looked at twice at full price. The saving becomes the justification.

Value shopping means something different. It means knowing what something is worth to you, not what the sticker says. A £50 jumper you wear for five years is better value than a £20 jumper you replace every season. The cheapest option is rarely the cheapest in the long run.

The trick is to stop treating shopping like a sport. Nobody gets a trophy for the best deal. You just end up with a full wardrobe and an empty bank account. Next time you see 50% off, ask yourself: would I buy this at full price? If the answer is no, you are not saving money. You are spending it.
