The Real Cost of a Deal

25 September 2026

I walked past a queue outside a discount store today. People waiting to save a few pounds on things they probably did not need. There is a difference between value shopping and deal hunting. One is discipline. The other is a trap.

Value shopping means knowing what something is worth to you. You buy a quality coat that lasts five winters. You pay more upfront but less per wear. You buy the washing machine that does not break after two years. That is value. It is boring. It works.

Deal hunting is different. It feels productive. You find a 50% off voucher for a brand you never heard of. You buy three because the offer is limited. You stack discounts on things you would not have bought at full price. The rush comes from the discount, not the item. The wardrobe fills with clothes you rarely wear. The cupboards fill with gadgets you never unpack.

The retailers know this. They set high reference prices to make the markdown look dramatic. They create artificial scarcity. They turn shopping into a game you are designed to lose.

The best deal is the one you do not take. The money you keep is worth more than the item you get. Next time you see a sale, ask yourself one question. Would I buy this at full price? If the answer is no, you are not saving money. You are spending it on something you did not want in the first place.
